The Vaimaki Family is the result of oenologist Vasilis Vaimakis’ exploration of the limits of natural vinification with Greek grapes. This urban winemaking project appears under the iconic and ever-changing label “Mater Natura.” The Vaimakis family’s work in wine production goes all the way back to the 19th century, but it saw a true revival in the late 70s, when Vasilis started working for the Zitsa and Amyndeo Co-Op and saw unexpected commercial success.
With that experience, he completed a PhD, focusing on white wine oxidation, and later began to experiment with zero-sulfite wines. This was meant to present the terroir of Greece’s best grapes, and resulted in the launch of the Mater Natura line back in 2009. The labels are distinguished by unique numbers that correspond with distinct vinifications.
